In 1954, Jose Froilan Gonzalez and Maurice Trintignant scored Ferrari's second victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. During the 1950s, these two men from the south of France were true pioneers in the renaissance of motor sport after the Second World War.
The Argentinian and the Frenchman occupy a very special place in the history of motor sport, linked to the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Formula 1. Three years before his victory at Le Mans, José Froilan Gonzalez (born in 1922) gave Ferrari the first of its 219 F1 victories. That year, he took part in the 24 Hours for the second time, at the wheel of a Talbot-Lago shared with his compatriot Onofre Marimon.
It was in 1954 that José Froilan Gonzalez and Maurice Trintignant were reunited at Le Mans, in one of the three cars entered by Scuderia Ferrari. Although they had both made their debuts at Sarthe in 1950, the former had never seen the chequered flag, while the latter finished for the first time in 1953 (sixth in a Gordini). Together, they won the race. In his last appearance in the 24 Hours, this victory gave Gonzalez (whose stout build earned him the nickname ‘The Bull of the Pampas’) a new status: the first driver to win both Formula 1 and Le Mans in a Ferrari.
