As the Royal Air Force's longest serving dedicated bomber squadron, it was somewhat fitting that No IX Squadron should have the honour of becoming the world's first operational Panavia Tornado unit in front-line service when it was fitted with the GR.1 variant in June 1982.
The Tornado was a highly advanced, nuclear-capable strike, attack and reconnaissance aircraft of the late Cold War, with its potentially devastating capabilities.
This aircraft dropped a 12,000lb Tallboy bomb on the German battleship Tirpitz on 15 September 1944. Tornado ZD748 was still wearing its 'Johnnie Walker' design when it was photographed in the static display of aircraft at the RAF Waddington Air Show in the summer of 1993.
