The VW 1303 has its origins in an American law that was ultimately not applied. Among other things, this bill required a minimum distance between the windscreen and the driver's head, which could only be achieved with a curved windscreen on the Beetle. VW built the vehicle anyway - and marketed it in the USA as the ‘Super-Beetle’.
