The Mazda MX-5, launched in 1989, reactivated the small, purist roadster segment overnight in the tradition of English and Italian cars. Instead of the 5,000 vehicles planned for the first year, almost 141,000 were sold. The success of the MX-5 brought numerous imitators onto the market, but with few exceptions they were discontinued without successors.
